The Vampire Lestat Episode 1 ending shows Lestat in a moment of human-like vulnerability and the arrival of a highly-anticipated character, Gabriella de Lioncourt (Jennifer Ehle).
A night of chaos and violences leaves Lestat battered, exposed, and questioning everything he’s built. So he turns to someone he trusts for help. The final moments reveal that the mysterious person he’s been texting throughout the episode is Gabriella, his mother, fledgling vampire, and lover.
The Mystery Texter
Throughout The Vampire Lestat episode 1 “Detroit,” Lestat repeatedly exchanges text messages with an unknown person saved in his phone only as “Toi”, or “You”. Daniel Malloy thought that Lestat might have been texting Louis, because Lestat was so invested in texting whoever it was at emotional moments.
The messages sent by Lestat become increasingly emotional as the episode progresses. At first, they seem like casual attempts to reach someone he trusts. But his last messages to Toi are vulnerable and confessional, telling them he is struggling.
His carefully crafted rock-star persona is beginning to crack. His fellow vampires are divided over his decision to reveal their existence to the world. Members of the Fang Gang attack him. His band discovers that he is an actual vampire. His tour is not going the way he wants.
For perhaps the first time all episode, Lestat appears genuinely vulnerable. He feels like the ground is slipping beneath him. The realization that he needs to go back and confront the past has left him feeling shaken and vulnerable, like a child. So naturally, he calls for his mother.
Who Is Gabriella?
For viewers unfamiliar with Anne Rice’s novels, Gabriella is far more than simply Lestat’s mother. She is one of the most important figures in his life and one of the people who understands him better than almost anyone else.
Although her cold nature has caused permanent damage to her son. “Mommy issues” doesn’t even begin to cover it. When Gabriella enters the motel room, Lestat narrates that she is his mother, his fledgling, and his lover.
That description may seem shocking to viewers unfamiliar with the complicated relationships often found in Anne Rice’s vampire mythology. However, in the Anne Rice universe that’s one of those things you’re just going to have to accept to appreciate the full development of the characters.
Why Does Gabriella Appear At The End Of Episode 1?
Gabriella arrives when Lestat is in a very fragile emotional state. The events in Detroit have shaken him. He has been physically injured, emotionally rattled, and forced to rethink his strategy to achieve the level of fame that he wants.
Earlier in the episode, Lestat experiences a revelation while performing. He realizes that if he wants to move forward, he needs to stop pretending and embrace his true nature. But doing that means confronting the people and events that shaped him.
That appears to be where Gabriella comes in. Gabriella, his mother and first love, may be his support and guide through his past loves, past traumas, and past triumphs so that he can figure out the next move for his future.
Gabriella also may be a catalyst that pushes Lestat to put into motion whatever part of his plan ends up creating some sort of global catastrophe that will affect the human population.
What Are The “Global Catastrophes” Lestat Mentions?
The other major mystery introduced in Episode 1 involves the “global catastrophes” that Lestat references on his “Failures” recordings.
The premiere never explains what these catastrophes are, but several clues suggest they are connected to his decision to become a public figure living in the open as a vampire.
Other vampires are already debating whether Lestat should be punished for openly revealing the existence of vampires. Some even argue that he should be killed.
By transforming himself into a global celebrity, Lestat may have set events in motion that affect far more than just his music career.
For now, the series is keeping those answers hidden, but the mystery appears poised to drive much of the season’s larger narrative.
What Does The Vampire Lestat Episode 1 Ending Set Up For Episode 2?
The Vampire Lestat Episode 2 synopsis teases that Lestat will revisit his past while dealing with the fallout from Detroit.
With Gabriella now at his side, viewers can likely expect a deeper exploration of Lestat’s history, his family, and the relationships that defined him long before he became a rock star.
If Episode 1 was about tearing down Lestat’s carefully constructed image, Episode 2 appears ready to begin examining the impact that Gabriella and other significant figures from the past had on creating the vampire Lestat from the ashes of human Lestat de Lioncourt.
A Woman Of Influence
The ending of “Detroit” makes it clear that Gabriella is one of the few beings that has any influence over the powerful Lestat. He said himself that he has the blood of the Queen, yet when he’s in trouble he wants his mother.
Gabriella isn’t a warm, comforting, or emotional mother. Her repeated abandonment of Lestat and narcissism combined with her power to manipulate could mean that she’s using her son to achieve some greater goal. It will be interesting to see as the season goes on just how much power Gabriella wields over her son.
