The Testaments episode 7 “Commitment” revealed more of Daisy’s backstory and a familiar face, and raised the stakes for Daisy inside Gilead.
It’s almost eerie to watch The Testaments, in a way that wasn’t there in The Handmaid’s Tale. I was trying to pin down why it’s so unsettling, and I think because both worlds are now so familiar to us.
For viewers who watched The Handmaid’s Tale, the world of Gilead feels familiar because we spent 7 seasons learning the inner workings of the brutal regime that runs that world. But the Toronto world where Daisy grew up feels very familiar too. It’s unsetting to feel equally comfortable in both worlds.
Because Gilead isn’t a world that should feel familiar or comfortable. We’re way too close to living in a Gilead-style regime in the United States right now. And maybe that’s part of the discomfort too, knowing how easily reality could cross that line.

But I had other thoughts besides that one about this episode. Let’s get into it:

- I don’t care what anyone says Daisy is Nicole/Holly and you’ll never convince me otherwise. I KNOW they said she isn’t but I don’t believe it. She is and I’ll die on that fucking hill. There’s no way it’s a coincidence that she looks/acts exactly like June.
- What horse does June have in the race? Hannah? Or NICOLE?! Or both??? It’s both.
- Maintain, Daisy, Maaaintaaain
- DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME??? That should be a THT/Testaments drinking game entry
- You can trust your sister, Daisy. It’s ok.
- The home visits make me feel like I’m suffocating.
- The day he lost his CHILD was the worst day of his life, nothing about losing his wife… and a history of domestic violence… fucking yikes. Curse you Aunt Lydia for giving Hannah to this asshole instead of Garth…
- That’s a painful lesson for Daisy… it hurts worse when they hurt the people around you and not you. That was a hard lesson for your mother to learn too.
- No man’s land… we’ve seen that a time or two….
I really wonder if Daisy’s going to be able to keep her shit together long enough to rise up the Pearl Girl ranks. She’s doing some pretty intense work for a teenager, and no one could blame her for blowing it. She wasn’t raised to have to be as guarded and cautious as the girls in Gilead, so she may not have the self-control to keep her identity hidden.
The Testaments Episode 8
There’s a reason The Testaments Episode 7 felt like we were holding our breath – and it’s because shit’s about to get real in episode 8.
The Testaments episode 8 “Broken” has an interesting synopsis that indicates some secrets are about to come to light:
As Agnes is swept up in wedding plans, Daisy hides a life-altering secret, and Huldah faces backlash after speaking out.
Does Agnes have to marry the grim reaper Commander Weston? What’s Daisy’s secret, besides the fact that she’s Mayday? And why can’t Huldah ever just have some peace? Give that sweet girl a kind husband and a farm please.
