Game of Thrones continues to conquer screens everywhere, including movie screens. There’s been talk of a feature-length film for a long time, along with talk about many different spin-offs, prequels, and sequels.
So far, there’s only been two spinoffs that have actually aired: House of the Dragon, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Season 3 of House of the Dragon premieres in June. The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms just wrapped up, but season 2 is expected to air in 2027. House of the Dragon has already been renewed for a 4th and final season.
But now it’s been confirmed that Warner Bros is moving forward with a feature length Game of Thrones film. Acclaimed writer Beau Willimon, who wrote Andor and House of Cards, among other projects, has been attached to the project. Willimon also was a producer on Severance.
What Will The Game Of Thrones Movie Focus On?
Even though there’s been three series with multiple seasons set in the Game of Thrones universe there’s still huge amounts of canon lore to work through. Back in 2013 the original creators of GoT pitched an epic film idea to HBO, but HBO declined. In hindsight, that’s probably a good thing.
But now that the franchise is a proven money maker, the streamer has gone all in on a massive “Dune-like” film. If it’s done well, it could lead to more films a well as more small-screen projects. There’s certainly plenty of stories left in the franchise to tell.
Aegon’s Conquest
It’s speculated the film will focus on Aegon’s conquest of Westeros. After the Doom of Valyria, Aegon and his wives, and their dragons, launched an assault on Westeros aiming to take over the continent.
The size and scope of the story, along with the dragons, would make Aegon’s conquest a fantastic story to tell in a large-screen format. Dragons burning armies in IMAX? Yes, please.
Fans have also floated the idea of a film about Robert’s Rebellion, which occurred just before the events in the original Game of Thrones series. Or a sequel about Arya Stark’s adventures. So far, the Targaryen house has been prominently featured in both spinoffs. It would be nice to see some of the other houses’ histories as well.
More Spin-Offs Are Coming
Whether or not more movies are made, there are more spin-offs in the universe coming. There will be an animated series based on the Sea Snake that’s already gotten a green light. And more ideas are being developed to cash in on the fans’ love for this franchise. I’ll be seated for every one, and every movie too.
